Santorini – what to expect

If you have not been to Santorini, you must have seen pictures of it on instagram. Its unearthly views and distinct blue round roofs with white buildings make it one of the top destinations for every travel enthusiast.

In reality, it is indeed breathtakingly beautiful in every way. However, it is different from what you would expect. The island itself is bigger than I anticipated; it is made up of several parts, such as the main city, called Oia, and there is also Fira, Imerovigli and others.

The most interesting part about the island is that it is made up completely of the leftovers of a huge volcanic eruption. It is also possible to view where the volcano is located underwater. Due to this, there are beaches that have white, black, or red sand, and the sea is clear and calm.

Walking around the town of Oia you feel that you are in a little village, where in every corner there is an incredible view of the city and the white buildings on the cliffs. The most outstanding, however, are the hotels and the luxury suites: they fully overlook the vast sea and face directly towards the sunset. It is the most romantic place to be, as the sunset in Santorini is something else entirely.

Santorini is also famous for its wine. We went to a wine tasting restaurant, where we were given the opportunity to try some wines while overlooking the sunset. Our flight back was scheduled before the sunset, but its delay meant that we got to enjoy it and savour every moment of our day trip.

Overall, I would say a day trip in Santorini is great, but if you can go on a romantic trip, it’s even better!
